There's another major update from UK network O2 and it could leave some UK customers needing to upgrade their smartphones. It's just been confirmed that the next area to lose access to the ageing 3G network is Scotland. Those living in eastern areas of the country - such as Aberdeen and Dundee - will start seeing 3G access being closed from November 5, with more locations then following after that.
Once switched off, anyone with a 3G-only device can no longer access data services or send messages via online platforms like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.
Calls and standard SMS texts will still be available, but that's it. O2 (or Virgin Media O2 as it's now called) is slowly ramping up its 3G closure, and other areas of the UK - such as Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford, Watford and Torquay - already losing access to this signal.
By the end of 2025, O2 plans to have switched off 3G across the whole of the UK. It's worth noting that this block should only affect a small number of people as most consumers now have 4G and 5G-ready phones in their pockets.
Other networks, including EE and Vodafone, have already shut things down in a bid to free up some much-needed network space. 3G, which first launched back in 2003, can no longer keep pace with modern needs as it's vastly slower than 4G and 5G. For example, 3G is only capable of supplying speeds at around 3Mbps - that's compared to 4G and 5G which can push things to 100Mbps.
It's clearly time for 3G to be sent to the history books, but those who haven't made the switch aren't being forgotten. O2 says that some 3G customers are being offered a 4G-ready device free of charge. Others who don't currently have a 4G handset or SIM are able to upgrade to a new device at a reduced price.
Customers of virtual network operators that use Virgin Media O2's mobile network - such as Tesco Mobile and giffgaff - will also be impacted by the switch-off and are being contacted directly by their provider.
Speaking about changes, Jeanie York, Virgin Media O2's Chief Technology Officer, said: "We're fast approaching the end of 2025 and 3G will soon be a thing of the past, replaced by faster, more reliable and more energy-efficient 4G and 5G networks that give our customers a better experience.
"We have already successfully withdrawn 3G in a number of UK locations, and in November we'll be turning our attention to large areas of Scotland. We know that the vast majority of our customers already have a 4G or 5G handset and will not have to take any action, and we're writing directly to those who will be impacted to provide guidance and support.
"While customers without a 4G or 5G device in Scotland are particularly urged to take swift action, regardless of where you live in the UK, you will need to upgrade very soon in order to continue using mobile data after 3G is switched off, so please do take action if you need to."
