Yvette Cooper thinks she's cracked the case. The Home Secretary revealed asylum seekers will now face a temporary ban on family reunions, plus tougher tests on their English language skills and scrutiny of their finances.
Mrs Cooper's plan might sound good on paper - but, as ever, she completely misses the point. Many of the young men piling into dinghies and crossing the Channel are not dreaming of settling their families in the UK. They are coming here to work, claim benefits and send money straight back home, where their families can then prosper.
In 2023 alone, migrants sent £9.3billion out of the country - enough to cover winter fuel payments four times over with change to spare.
This is money that could have been spent in our shops, down our pubs and on our public services. Instead, it's money sent thousands of miles away through apps with adverts plastered all over the London Underground and the internet.
If Yvette Cooper is really serious about stopping the boats, I have a suggestion for her. She should levy a 100% tax on migrants sending money abroad from the UK. I suspect the tens of thousands of young men crossing the Channel every year would soon decide France is not so bad after all.
It's been a rotten year for CEOs. I can see your tiny violin at work - but hear me out. First there was Andy Byron, chief executive of US tech firm Astronomer. He was caught on Coldplay's kisscam looking very cosy with a colleague who was definitely not his wife. The painful moment went viral and the pair were forced to resign.
But this week they gained a new rival in the CEO Hall of Shame.
Piotr Szczerek, the millionaire boss of a Polish company called Drogbruk, became 'most hated man in America' after he was caught snatching a US Open player's cap from a young fan. Did he do what all good CEOs typically do when their actions are called into question; double down, refuse to apologise for his mistake and walk away with the big prize?
No, he grovelled and gave the hat back. He must be awful in the boardroom.
Chicken nugget chaos!Chicken nuggets are officially off the menu. An alarming new study this week claims too much of the breaded stuff can hurt your odds in bed. Researchers found that a diet rich in 'ultra-processed' foods like chicken nuggets, crisps and chocolate led men to have lower testosterone levels - the hormone that gets you up in the morning.
They also found that stuffing your face with junk food will make you fat. Who knew? This bombshell report follows several studies warning us not to eat everything from red meat to cereal and burnt toast. Should we pay any attention to these miserable missives?
My advice: take them with a pinch of salt.
