Piers Morgan branded Novak Djokovic a "monumental d***" after the Serbian had lashed out at the Wimbledon crowd last year. Djokovic sat down to discuss a host of issues with the broadcaster last week, with the interview due to land in the coming days.
Djokovic, who moved to Greece with his family earlier this year, is one of the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport and has won a record 24 men's Grand Slam singles titles. At the weekend, he won the Hellenic Championship in front of an adoring crowd. But he hasn't always had the full backing of fans watching on in stadiums.
In 2024, Djokovic accused Wimbledon fans of using a Holger Rune chant as a ploy to boo him.
"I know they were cheering for Rune but that's an excuse to also boo," the veteran explained. "I have been on the Tour for more than 20 years. I know all the tricks."
"I played in much more hostile environments, trust me - you guys can't touch me."
Djokovic then ended an interview with the BBC early after he was repeatedly asked about the crowd's behaviour towards him. And Morgan took to X (formerly Twitter) at the time to give his opinion on the issue.
"Djokovic is being a monumental d*** at Wimbledon this year, and I'm all here for it," he wrote. "He deserves way more respect than he gets, from fans & media, and he's obviously bored with pretending he's OK with it."
Morgan then asked Djokovic to sit down for a chat with him as the 60-year-old added: "Let's do an interview, @DjokerNole - I won't treat you like this."
The former Good Morning Britain host had previously slammed Djokovic after the blockbuster star had been deported from Melbourne ahead of the 2022 Australian Open for violating Australia's pandemic rules.
"Covid rule cheat, immigration form liar, & anti-vaxxer icon Novak Djokovic loses final appeal against deportation & will be thrown out of Australia without being able to compete in Aus Open. Good," Morgan wrote on the same platform.
Following his previous comments about Djokovic, Morgan has finally got his wish to chat to the 38-year-old.
And ahead of the release of their interview, Morgan shared a picture of the duo on X as he told his followers: "DROPPING THIS WEEK ON @PiersUncensored. My world exclusive interview with @DjokerNole - the Goat of tennis.
"And yes, as many of you have pointed out, we haven't always been this friendly...something we finally discuss face-to-face. It's a great conversation."
