There is one step you should add when making homemade chips in the air fryer. Chips are so easy to make in the air fryer. It can be as simple as cutting up your potatoes into your desired chip shape and putting them into the air fryer until they are crispy. But there is one step you should take before putting them in the air fryer for the very best results, says one cook. Gloria Duggan runs the recipe website Homemade and Yummy, and shared her go-to recipe for easy homemade chips that are cooked in the air fryer.

Air fryers have changed the game for many UK households, with potatoes being one of the easiest things to cook in these handy devices. For Gloria, there are a few steps involved, one of which incorporates an ingredient you may not have used when cooking homemade chips before. Prior to placing her cut chips into the air fryer, she coats them in avocado oil. Avocado oil is known to achieve a crunchy exterior when it comes to air frying potatoes, something we look for when we are making homemade chips.

"These are the best air fryer French fries," she says. "They produce a cleaner taste with minimal oil."

The ingredients she uses are:

  • 2 ½ pounds potatoes
  • 1 ½ tablespoons avocado oil (divided)
  • ½ teaspoon chilli powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • smoked sea salt to taste

Firstly, you should wash your potatoes with water and cut them into the desired shape. You can peel them or leave the skin of the potatoes on, depending on your preference.

Then, you place them in a bowl with the avocado oil, tossing them until they are coated. You can add your chosen spices here. Gloria uses chilli powder and smoked paprika, mixing the potatoes well so that they all get coated in the spices.

Add the rest of your avocado oil to the air fryer along with your potatoes and cook them for around 25 minutes. Once you have achieved golden brown chips, they are ready to season and eat.

Some people also decide to boil their potatoes for a short time before putting them in the air fryer as it helps the chips get softer on the inside. However, this step is only necessary if you have the time to do so. You can still achieve crispy homemade chips in the air fryer without boiling them first.
