Former PDC world champion Michael Smith has announced he's taking time out of the sport to undergo laser eye treatment. The 34-year-old, who in 2023 beat Michael van Gerwen in a memorable final at Alexandra Palace, has struggled for form this year.
In January, he confirmed he was battling arthritis in his right hand. 'Bully Boy' has since dropped to No.21 in the world and failed to qualify for the World Matchplay in Blackpool for the first time in 12 years. His PR team, Darting Promotions Limited, has now released an update on the star's health after he withdrew from several upcoming tournaments.
"As you are all aware, Michael has been suffering with arthritis in his right hand for a while and has recently developed a problem with his left foot," they stated. "After recent blood tests, these have revealed certain answers, and we are now hopeful that with a course of medication, these problems can be controlled in the future.
"As you will have seen, Michael has withdrawn from this week's events in Germany, this is due to him requiring a scan on his shoulder, which was damaged at Christmas time. This has been arranged for this week, which unfortunately means he is unable to take part in the upcoming Pro Tours and European Tour qualifiers."

The company added that Smith was hopeful he could 'resolve' the issues and return to his best. He shared the statement himself on social media, but also added significant information.
"And get my eyes lasered in there also," he said. "I hope you will all understand. But I promise I'll be back and firing again few hiccups won't ruin me, I've proved that time and time again."
Smith added muscle and heart emojis to his post. He didn't confirm when the surgery is taking place, but players in non-contact sports are advised to take a short break after the procedure before returning to action.
The former world No.1 hasn't won a PDC tournament since his Ally Pally triumph. However, he did partner Luke Humphries to a World Cup of Darts win with Team England in Frankfurt last year.
