Andy Murray's Dunhill Links partner was banished from course and called Ryder Cup hero 'twit'

Andy Murray's golfing partner at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Eddie Pepperell, has had a colourful and occasionally contentious career. The former Wimbledonchampion teamed up with DP Tour star Pepperell for an annual Pro-Am in Scotland, which takes place beside a Tour event.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the main event was cut short to 54 holes. Since retiring from tennis, Murray, who plays off a two-handicap, has devoted more time to golf and hasn't embarrassed himself, despite a clip of him botching a bunker shot going viral.

He appeared to get on well with English star Pepperell at the tournament, and after the competition ended, the pair tallied a total score of 23 under par. This meant they finished tied for 18th after shooting 65, 64 and 64, respectively.

Pepperell has had a fascinating career, including being banned by his own club and calling US Ryder Cup hero Bryson DeChambeau a "twit." With the Alfred Dunhill in the books, Mirror Sport takes a look at some of the incidents Pepperell has been involved in.

Banned from home club

Before turning professional, Pepperell was banished from his home club, Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire, for six months after losing his temper and damaging a green. He discussed the incident during his appearance on PING's with Sky Sports' on-course reporter, Wayne Riley, reports Wales Online.

He said: "It was the club championship, I think it was the second round. It became a 54-hole [tournament], Green course, Blue course, Red course. This was the second day and I was doing quite well but struggling on the green, which was standard for me at Frilford.

"I had like a four-foot birdie putt and missed it and the red steam... The red mist descended and I gave it one of those [pretends to slam his putter into the ground].

"I think I'd only done it six or seven times in my life up to that point, but this time I got caught. I did do a great reparation job, I will say. I repaired it beautifully.

"You could barely see what had happened afterwards, but the group behind did come and notice it and then they pulled it up and took a photo and made it look much worse than it was. I got six months for that."

Saying sorry to DeChambeau

Pepperell previously apologised to Ryder Cup ace DeChambeau after calling the American a "twit" for alleged slow play at the Northern Trust Open in 2019. The controversy erupted after footage surfaced of DeChambeau spending two minutes over an eight-foot putt, which he then missed.

Pepperell said: "Just look at Tommy [Fleetwood] and Justin [Thomas], both looking completely bored. Slow players do this to their playing partners, making the game less enjoyable.

"Problem is, the unaffected single-minded twit in this instance doesn't care much for others." DeChambeau hit back by saying: "Eddie Pepperell, not fair to say. I would love to speak to him personally and talk about it."

This prompted a backtrack from Pepperell, who stated: "Seems my comment regarding Bryson's slow play has garnered plenty of attention and I just want to sincerely apologise to Bryson for being personal and referring to him as a twit. That was unnecessary and something I shouldn't have said."
