According to the scriptures, girls are considered manifestations of Goddess Durga herself. The Devi Bhagavata states that "where girls are worshipped, Goddess Durga herself resides there, pleased." When devotees observe fasts, perform devotional rituals, and perform rituals for nine days during Navratri, Kanya Pujan is considered the culmination of their spiritual practice. It is believed that when girls are worshipped with reverence and devotion and fed, Goddess Durga fulfills all the devotee's wishes and bestows happiness and prosperity in life.

Each Form of Navadurga

In the Devi Bhagavatam, nine girls are described as the visible manifestations of Navadurga. According to it, Navkumaris are living embodiments of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. For this purpose, girls aged two to ten years are selected.

A two-year-old girl is called 'Kumarika'; her worship increases wealth, longevity, and strength.

A three-year-old girl is called 'Trimurti'; her worship brings happiness and prosperity to the home.

The worship of a four-year-old girl, 'Kalyani', facilitates auspicious events such as marriage.

The worship of a five-year-old girl, 'Rohini', brings health benefits.

The worship of a six-year-old girl, 'Kalika', suppresses enemies.

The worship of an eight-year-old girl, 'Shambhavi', destroys sorrow and poverty.

The worship of a nine-year-old girl, 'Durga', cures incurable diseases and accomplishes difficult tasks.
Worshipping a ten-year-old girl, 'Subhadra,' leads to salvation.

In the Devi Bhagavatam, these nine girls are considered the embodiment of Kumari Navadurga. Girls over the age of ten should not be included in the Kumari Puja. Goddess Mahashakti is never pleased without Kanya Pujan.

How to perform Kanya Pujan during Navratri?

On Maha Ashtami or Maha Navami, after bathing, worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Gauri.

After this, invite nine girls and a boy for Kanya Pujan.

Begin the puja by welcoming the girls.

Afterward, wash the feet of all the girls with clean water, wipe them with a clean cloth, and have them sit on a seat.

Then, apply a tilak of kumkum and rice grains on the foreheads of the girls.

Tie a sacred thread or a sacred thread on their hands.

Light a ghee lamp in a plate and perform aarti for all the girls.

After performing the Aarti, offer the girls puris, chana, halwa, and coconut as bhog.

After the meal, offer them gifts according to your means.

Finally, touch the feet of the girls and seek their blessings.

Finally, give them Akshat (rice grains) and ask them to sprinkle some of it in their homes.

The Importance of Kanya Pujan

According to Hindu scriptures, girls between the ages of two and ten are suitable for Kanya Pujan. Girls between the ages of two and ten represent various forms of Goddess Durga. Additionally, a boy in the form of a monkey is also included in this puja, symbolizing Bhairav Baba or Hanuman Ji. It is said that worshipping Kanya on the eighth and ninth day of the month pleases Goddess Durga, and her blessings remain with your family forever.

Through Kanya Pujan, sages and saints have taught us to respect women. During Navratri, devotees of the Goddess should take a pledge that they will respect girls and women throughout their lives and will always strive for their safety. Only then will the Shakti Puja of Navratri be truly accomplished. Kanya Pujan also has deep social significance. This tradition gives us the message of women's power and respect for girls. In Indian culture, women are worshipped as the foundation of creation and as mothers. Kanya Pujan further strengthens the idea that society is incomplete without women's power. Respecting and worshipping girls promotes a positive attitude towards girls in society. It gives the message that daughters are not a burden but a symbol of strength and good fortune.
