The Simpsons new movie announced after almost two decades: All you need to know bout the release

The creators of The Simpsons Movie have officially announced the next instalment in the franchise, scheduled to hit theatres on July 23, 2027.

According to Variety, the upcoming film has replaced an untitled Marvel project, which has now been dropped from Disney’s 20th Century Studios release slate.

This change means that within Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, there will be no new comic-book release between Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.

The news was shared by 20th Century Studios on Instagram early Tuesday, with the caption: "Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theatres with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!"

Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons holds the record as the longest-running animated series and sitcom on television. As per Variety, the show has already been renewed through its 40th season, set to air in 2028 and 2029.

Set in the fictional town of Springfield, the series follows the lives of the Simpson family—Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

The first feature-length film, The Simpsons Movie, was released in July 2007 and became a huge box office success, grossing $536 million worldwide against a budget of $75 million, reported Variety.

Directed by series veteran David Silverman, the movie revolved around Springfield being trapped under a massive glass dome after Homer accidentally polluted the local lake.

Although a sequel had been discussed for years, no progress was made until now.

After decades on air and one movie since its 1989 debut, showrunner Matt Selman told Variety that streaming has been key to keeping the series culturally relevant while also bringing in new audiences.
